CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Rex wouldn't let me help search the mayor's desk. I was in a grumpy mood when I got home. It was dinnertime, and Rex would be working, considering this new information. Which meant I'd have to make dinner on my own.
I slumped on the couch with a bag of chips. Those agents hadn't improved my mood either. What a couple of idiots. I texted Riley to see if he knew them from his very brief stint with the FBI's Omaha office. He didn't respond. I texted Kelly to see where Riley was, and she said he was tied up with his other case and couldn't talk. Then she told me to go to bed.
Philby appeared, wearing his rubber werewolf mask. We'd gotten the mask for our troop's Halloween parade float one year, and the cat had taken an extreme liking to it. Lately, she'd been wearing it when she was irritated. She probably was still mad about the taxidermy shop. I probably shouldn't have said Bobb. But since I did, it was clear that my punishment was not over.
"Sorry Philby." I reached out to scratch her back, and she danced out of the way. Martini, sensing a possible napping opportunity, ran over and collapsed across my lap. Leonard came over and put his head on my knee.
"See?" I told the angry feline. "They love me."
Philby growled through the werewolf mask. She sounded really authentic.
I wondered if Rex had found anything. I wondered if I could get him to tell me if he did. Maybe he'd found evidence pointing to the mayor as Dodd's murderer. He could've just run off, thinking the heat was on.
And then there was the attack from the mysterious woman seen with Dodd. There was no doubt in my mind that she was the one who attacked me. No one else there had any reason to, unless the kid who cleaned up after Dickie was having me taken out for knowing too much about his conversations with his mom.
So why was she there? She had to have been following me. The woman must have planned to attack. Who was she? What was her connection to Dodd? Why did she think I was a threat?
I mean, of course I was a threat. I was investigating. And I did have a lot of success in finding killersâ¦at least locally.
And what role did Betty and Hilly play in all of this? Hilly was acting weirdâ¦but then, that was kind of her thing. Sometimes I wondered if she was doing it on purpose to keep me wondering.
Man, I was exhausted. I hadn't done much today, but for some reason I was still dragging. As darkness fell, I found myself snacking on chips, trying to make all the pieces of this case fit. There were far too many variables, and frankly, it bothered me.
Who was this mystery woman? It would be pretty convenient if she's the one who killed Dodd, warned me off, and kidnapped the mayor. But she was the one suspect I knew absolutely nothing about.
